telemarketers or not, they still suck
I get a lot of lame telemarketing calls. Mostly on my home line. I have told every business that calls during dinner to add me to their 'Do not call' list, which they are required to keep by law. When someone calls I usually pop open the Junkbuster's Anti Telemarketing Script which is usually pretty effective. They usually get rattled when I have their name, a supervisors name, their return number, company address and a time that is best to reach them. They usually don't want to talk about anything anymore. I have even had a few people say, 'That's none of your business'... except that they are required by law to fork over that information...
The FCC's rules require persons or entities making a telephone solicitation to your home to provide the following information:
- the name of the individual caller;
- the name of the person or entity on whose behalf the call is being made; and
- a telephone number or address at which that person or entity may be contacted.
Today I found out businesses that call for marketing or opinion surveys that use an autodialer are exempt from keeping a 'do not call' list. I am not quite sure why 'polling companies' (as they are referred to on the FCC site) are exempt from telemarketing laws. They use an autodialer (numbers pulled at random), are soliciting information from you, you don't receive anything for your time, and they profit from this. This sounds like a perfect candidate for inclusion in the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
If you want to do me a personal favor, give Tom Harney a call (800)748-5306, one of the managers over at Discovery Research, and tell him you think they should implement a 'Do Not Call' list. He said that he has brought this up to management before but 'The rules for telemarketers don't apply to them.' Hmm. Well see.
